A mirror site is a copy of a website, or of its files, hosted on a different server or domain. Unlike a proxy site, which forwards each request back to the original, a mirror holds its own copy and keeps running if the original goes offline. Software archives and open-source projects use mirrors to spread download load and stay available during outages.

How mirror networks keep a pirate brand alive

Pirate sites use mirrors for resilience. A popular streaming site or torrent index will often run on several domains at once, sometimes on different hosts and under different domain extensions. When one domain is seized, suspended by its registrar or blocked in a country, traffic moves to the next. Operators announce new addresses through social accounts, Telegram groups and "official domains" pages, and regular users learn where to look.

For a rights holder, this means a successful takedown of one domain can look like a win on a report while the site carries on almost unaffected. Mirrors also inherit the brand's recognition, so they climb back into search results quickly once users start searching for the new address.

Mirror versus proxy versus clone

Three kinds of look-alike sites tend to be lumped together:

• a mirror is run by, or with, the original operator and serves the same catalogue from its own copy;
• a proxy relays the original site live and holds nothing itself;
• a clone imitates a well-known pirate brand to capture its traffic, often with different content, sometimes with malware.

Treating them as one distorts both reporting and strategy. Clones are separate operations with their own hosts. Proxies fall when their origin falls. Mirrors have to be handled as parts of the same operation, or the operation simply moves.

Proving a mirror belongs to the same operation

Evidence that a domain is a mirror strengthens notices and supports requests that cover the whole network rather than one address at a time. Analysts compare page templates and content IDs, matching file hashes or stream sources, shared analytics or advertising identifiers, cross-links between domains and announcements naming the new address.

Recording these links alongside the infringing content means a new mirror can be reported within its first days instead of the case being rebuilt each time. Watching for re-uploads and new mirror domains as they surface is a standing part of ongoing protection, since a network that loses domains faster than it can replace them eventually loses its audience.
