What a digital watermark is
A digital watermark is an identifier woven directly into a film, image or audio track rather than sitting on top of it as a visible logo. It is designed to be imperceptible to viewers while remaining detectable by the tools that read it.
Forensic (invisible) vs visible watermarks
A visible watermark, like a broadcaster’s on-screen logo, deters casual copying but can be cropped out. A forensic watermark is invisible and far more robust: it is engineered to survive re-encoding, compression, screen capture and format changes, so it stays with the copy as it spreads.
How it traces a leak
Each copy or streaming session can carry a unique watermark. When an infringing copy surfaces, reading its watermark points back to the specific recipient, device or session it originated from, turning an anonymous leak into an accountable one.
Where it fits in content protection
Watermarking does not remove piracy on its own. Instead, it identifies where a leak began. Paired with continuous detection and takedown enforcement, it lets rights holders both remove infringing copies and close the source that produced them.
